SACAP guideline fees

The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) publishes guideline fees for Standard Services (based on the cost of the project); and for Additional Services (based on the cost of the professional's time). 

Project-cost fees (for Standard Services)

Although architectural fees are scaled by the complexity of building being designed, the actual fee is derived from your budget. This is why a realistic value of every design's anticipated cost must be done. Project-cost fees allow you to demand the architectural professional work as many hours as necessary, whenever necessary. You should check that the professional has completed all the tasks in that work-stage before paying that invoice. 

Time-based fees (for Additional Services)

SACAP also publishes guideline rates (Rands per hour) for additional services. These rates are dependent on the position and experience of the person doing the work.

Expenses

Statutory municipal application fees (Site Development Plans, Building Plans, Demolition Permits, Trading licenses, etc.) are normally paid directly by yourself, otherwise the architectural professional should add a 10% surcharge when recovering expenses.

Mileage and printing should be reimbursed at rates determined by the Department of Public Works found here. 

SACAP recommends that where the fees are based on the project-cost, an hourly rate for time spent in traffic should only be invoiced if the time and distance exceeds 2hr or 100km per round trip. Where the fees are based on time the professional should be paid the full hourly rate for time spent in traffic irrespective of the distance travelled.
